Silent Walking Meditation

Walking Together in Peace in celebration
of the 8th Annual International Peace Day.

September has been proclaimed the Month of Peace in Providence and throughout Rhode Island. Mayor Angel Taveras and Governor Lincoln Chafee have issued Proclamations to make September an official Month of Peace.

Saturday, September 24th
6:30 pm
walk start - Waterplace Basin

WaterFire and The Peace Flag Project have joined together to celebrate our community and how we can create a peaceful community by the way each of us live our lives every day. We invite everyone to come to Waterplace Park at 6:30 pm on Saturday, September 24th to participate in a silent meditation walk. We encourage everyone to add your light to the night by donating $5 which will light one luminaria. Click the "donate" button below to participate.

Our goal is to reach 500 luminaria candle lanterns illuminating the path of the Peace Walk from the basin to Memorial Park.

Observing the Month of Peace in Providence is an expansion of celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Peace events for the last seven years. The Month is being organized by Ginny Fox of the Peace Flag Project (PFP). Her PFP has been the primary sponsor of the UN Peace Days in Providence.

“A Month of Peace is very exciting, and we have lots of events going on. There are Peace Flag exhibits in all the Community Libraries of Providence, and there is an exhibit of Peace Art at First Unitarian Church of Providence. And that’s only the beginning of a month of celebrations sponsored by the Peace Flag Project (PFP) as well as other community organizations in Providence, “ said Ginny Fox, Executive Director of PFP. “ There will be two special WaterFire celebrations this month: one on September 10,  with RI for Community and Justice, a 10th anniversary remembrance of 9/11; and one on September 24 featuring a community Walking Meditation to celebrate the UN International Day of Peace.

There are many events celebrating peace, and all events are free and open to the public. Click here for a schedule of events this month. Check out www.thepeaceflagproject.org.for more details.
